What is Praxis?

For hundreds of years, the art of genetic augmentation has been heavily monitored via the Praxis Protocol, an operation overseen by several first-world nations of [homeworld]. Any genetic manipulation had been banned for over 1,000 years prior to Praxis, due to numerous wars and illegal gene splicing. But eventually, Praxis was enabled to allow volunteers to engage in heavily-supervised genetic augmentation, heightening their senses and abilities.

Moreover, Praxis granted certain individuals the ability to access atomic manipulation on a personal scale, rather than the prior, large industrial scale. This, coupled with the invention and application of the atoman, allowed Paxians injected with a particular gene cocktail to fundamentally alter the world around them. Over time, atoman applications were honed into "spells," or stable, rote manipulations using a series of gestures through the atoman. A few more popular spells were bundled together into grimoires.

Nine genetic Praxian variants were established, utilizing the nine gene domains: Arcana, Blade, Bone, Codex, Grace, Midnight, Sage, Splendor, and Valor. These domains, highly researched for nearly a century, are proven effective and have minimal side effects. They are also codependent, meaning that an individual domain will not function without a second. These combinations have been specially organized such that one domain can interact with only two others. This has been dubbed the Domain Circle, and has created the nine "classes" of Praxis: Bard, Druid, Guardian, Ranger, Rogue, Seraph, Sorcerer, Warrior, and Wizard.

There are only two known side-effects of the Praxis Protocol:

  • First, while the gene domains enhance energy production within a subject's cells, many of the augments are powerful enough to produce intense strain on the subject. Thus, over time, the subject will grow increasingly weary without rest or the utilization of enhancements, such as Stamina potions.
  • Second, the effect of Praxis on the subject from a sociological perspective is intriguing. In short, un-augmented people find Praxians unnerving and strange. This effect has been heavily studied and the reasoning is still unknown. Historical records indicate that this may have been a response to all genetic manipulations, initially, though the effect wore off after several decades. Why it persists with Praxians is unknown. Typical symptoms include goosebumps, mild anxiety, and a sense of unease.
